Best Shoes for Summer Camp: What to Pack So Kids Stay Comfortable and Blister-Free

If there is one thing I have learned after years of summer camp packing, it is that shoes can make or break the entire experience.

Camp is hard on feet. Kids walk all day, walk all over camp between activities, and jump in and out of water. Because of that, the wrong shoes lead to blisters, wet socks, and a lot of discomfort.

The good news is that a simple, thoughtful shoe plan makes everything easier. Once you get this part right, camp feels smoother for both kids and moms.

The Simple Summer Camp Shoe Rule

Every child going to overnight camp needs more shoes than you think.

I always pack four types:

This combination covers almost every camp situation without overpacking.

Best Shoes for Girls at Summer Camp

For girls, comfort is everything. Camp outfits change daily, but shoes usually stay consistent.

Tevas or Water-Friendly Sandals for Girls

Tevas are my absolute favorite camp shoe for girls. They have adorable colors and patterns and never rub kids’ feet, even during long walking days. They also dry quickly after water activities and creek walks. Most importantly, they work for almost everything except formal camp events.

Athletic Shoes for Everyday Wear

I always pack a pair of athletic sneakers for daily camp activities. If your child is going to camp for longer than a week, I recommend sending shoes that are already broken in but still in good shape. Camp is not the place for brand-new shoes. However, they also should not be falling apart. You want something dependable that can last the entire session.

Flip Flops for the Shower

The shower area at summer camp can get pretty messy and well worn throughout the day with all the coming and going. So shower shoes are definitely non negotiable. I always pack simple flip flops for walking to and from the bathroom showers. They protect feet and are easy to slip on quickly.

Slides for the Pool Area

Slides are perfect for pool time and downtime around the cabin. They are easy to take on and off, which kids appreciate when they are constantly moving between water and activities.

Always Pack a Backup Pair

This is something I learned the hard way.I always send an extra pair of shoes, just in case something gets wet, lost, or uncomfortable. Camp life is unpredictable, and an inexpensive pair of backup shoes save the day more often than you would think.

Best Shoes for Boys at Summer Camp

Boys tend to be harder on shoes at camp, especially with sports and outdoor activities. The shoe strategy is the same, but durability matters even more.

Tevas or Sport Sandals

Tevas are also my top pick for boys. They hold up well during hiking, water days, and general camp wear. Most importantly, they do not cause the same rubbing issues that many traditional sandals do. They also dry quickly after lake or creek activities. The velcro closure makes taking them on and off a breeze.

Well-Broken-In Athletic Shoes

I always send athletic shoes that are already worn in but still sturdy. I always send older shoes to summer camp so we are not worried about them getting ruined, and it makes it easy to just toss them when they come home if they are beyond saving. That said, if your child is staying longer than a week, it is probably best to pack shoes in a little better condition so they can truly hold up through the full session. My son’s camp is just one week, so I feel comfortable with sending old shoes. This way you can toss yucky shoes after camp!

Flip Flops for the Shower

Flip flops are essential for bathroom and shower use. They are lightweight, easy to pack, and protect feet from wet floors.

Slides for Pool and Cabin Time

Slides are great for boys at camp because they are quick and easy. They work well for pool time, walking around the cabin, and casual downtime.

Backup Shoes Are a Must

I always pack a second pair of athletic shoes. Even if they never get used, they provide peace of mind. Camp conditions can change quickly, and having a backup pair avoids last-minute stress.

Don’t Forget blister Band-Aids. No matter how good the shoes are, blisters still happen at camp. New routines, extra walking, and hot weather all contribute to sore spots on feet.

I always pack blister Band-Aids in every shoe bag and backpack. They are usually one of the most-used items during the first few days of camp. My kids have told me that this brand of blister band aids stays on well in the water.

If Your Camp Has Special Activities, Pack Accordingly

Not all camps are the same, and shoe needs can change depending on activities. If your child’s camp does a lot of hiking at camp, I always recommend sending an extra pair of sturdy athletic shoes that are specifically for trails and uneven ground. This helps keep their everyday sneakers from getting worn down too quickly, especially on longer sessions.

The same idea applies to other specialty activities as well. If there are ropes courses, horseback riding, or adventure programs, you may want shoes that are more supportive and protective than standard camp sneakers. Some camps also have specific “activity days” like farm visits, nature exploration, or service projects where shoes can get especially dirty or wet.Having a dedicated pair for those moments makes everything easier and helps extend the life of their main shoes.

It also gives kids a little more comfort and stability when they are trying new things, which goes a long way in helping them feel confident at camp.

Final Thoughts on Camp Shoes

The right shoe setup makes camp easier, happier, and much more comfortable for kids. A mix of Tevas, broken-in sneakers, shower flip flops, slides, and backup shoes covers every situation they will face.

Most importantly, a little preparation now means fewer complaints later and more time spent enjoying camp instead of dealing with sore feet.
