I can’t believe I’ve never shared James’ dog themed birthday party, one of our happiest little celebrations, inspired by our golden retriever, Sunny. It was one of my absolute favorites. This celebration was full of warmth and simple joy. Years later, I still look back on this day with a full heart.
We planned a come and go party, which turned out to be just right for preschool kids. It allowed families to drop in when it worked for them. Everyone could pop by, stay as long as they liked. As a result, the whole celebration had a relaxed, easygoing pace that made everyone feel welcome.

To greet guests, I created a colorful balloon garland to hang on one side of the porch. Jumbo balloons with colorful tassels floated along the sidewalk, adding a cheerful, festive touch that made the whole house feel like a celebration. I linked a similar balloon garland here.

Of course our inspiration came from Sunny, our golden retriever. We kept the theme close to home, this dog themed party was inspired by our own pup, Sunny. She’s always been James’ sidekick since the beginning, so of course she had to be part of the fun.

Midway through the party, the highlight rolled up: an old-fashioned ice cream truck. Kids ran to choose their favorite treat, and it brought so much joy with so little effort. It was a hit with grown-ups too. It was easy to coordinate, and the kids and parents enjoyed a treat.
The cake was simple, charming, and right on theme. James’ cake was topped with tiny dog figurines wearing miniature party hats I found on Etsy. It was simple, sweet, and just right for the occasion.
For the big day, James wore a pale blue Lila + Hayes golf shirt, monogrammed with his initials and a golden retriever crest. It felt classic and tailored, but still playful for a little boy’s birthday.

One of my favorite details? A small metal cart I styled using a Meri Meri card with illustrated dogs. It held bubbles, puppy photo props, and tiny stuffed animals for party favors. I’ve used that cart in so many ways since, it’s become one of my go-to party staples. The puppy dog favor tags are a favorite from Over the Moon Gift.

This dog themed birthday party reminded me that sometimes the most memorable gatherings are also the most effortless. Kids laughed, parents mingled, and we celebrated a boy and his dog with charm, ease, and just enough sparkle.
