Back to school season is here, and I’ve created the ultimate back to school essentials guide for kids ages 8–12. I hope that it’s helpful and makes shopping easier for this busy time of year!
There’s something about the rhythm of back to school season that never changes, fresh notebooks, sharpened pencils, and the annual hunt for back to school clothing and backpacks. As a mom of four (with two now in college), I’ve learned to enjoy this time because it really does go by so very fast! I’ve also learned a lot over the years about what we actually use and need when it comes to back to school supplies.
Each August, I start with the essentials and focus on back to school products that are high quality, comfortable, and wear well. These are the items our kids reach for daily, and with a little planning, they’ll take you well into fall.
Below is my essentials list on what to purchase at the beginning of the school year. I’ve linked lots of items below for girls and boys ages 8-12. Scroll through this whole post for links to some great essentials. I’ve rounded up all of my favorites!

When my daughter was younger, I picked up a few things along the way about what worked (and what didn’t) during the school years. Girls usually like outfits that feel cute but are still easy to move in throughout the day. Cotton dresses, soft leggings, and tunic-style tops are a great combination. Little touches, like puff sleeves, fun prints, or soft textures, can elevate even simple pieces.
Easy-to-wear shoes were a lifesaver on school days. Here are a few options that are great for the school day and recess.
Veja sneakers are a great option that are both stylish and comfortable. Classic white or blush colored tennis shoes pair well with everything. Crocs are a popular pick too, but keep PE and playground days in mind, most schools require closed toe athletic shoes.
Fun patterns, soft colors, and a little bit of sparkle go a long way when it comes to girls’ school gear. Look for backpacks with enough room for books, water bottles, and a jacket or pullover. Insulated lunchboxes and small extras like keychains or pencil pouches are always useful and fun.

The best back to school essentials items for boys start with pieces that are easy to mix and match. Performance polos and soft cotton tees from Vineyard Vines or J.Crew hold up great and still look great by the end of the day. My 11-year-old son is all about comfort, and his favorite shirts are the ones made from performance fabric, especially when they feature our local team’s name and logo. Pair those with pull-on shorts in classic colors like khaki, gray, navy and black for a fuss free routine.
We don’t live in an area where snow is a concern, so we go with one classic coat, a lighter jacket or fleece, and a pair of fleece gloves for colder mornings.
For boys, durability and ease are everything. These options can handle sports at recess and still look good in the classroom. We love New Balance and On Cloud sneakers. They’re supportive, easy to wear with casual clothes, and are built to last.
For boys, think durability and simplicity. Backpacks with strong zippers and extra compartments are great for organizing everything from folders to water bottles. Lunchboxes that are easy to clean and actually keep food cool are a win, and practical accessories, like a labeled water bottle or clip-on sanitizer, come in handy throughout the day. always get left behind at school or lost in the car. Stainless steel options that keep water cold all day are our favorite.
It may be hot outside now, but cool mornings always sneak up faster than we expect. We don’t live in an area where snow is a concern, so we go with one classic coat, a lighter jacket or fleece, and a pair of fleece gloves for colder mornings. For layering, zip-up fleeces and lightweight jackets are perfect once the cooler mornings begin. I usually buy those early in the season before the good sizes are gone.

For Girls, layer with a lightweight cardigan, and add a fleece pullover for chilly mornings. Brands like Boden and J.Crew have timeless styles that are easy to dress up or down.

For Boys, start with a comfortable pullover, and keep a lightweight rain jacket on hand for unexpected weather. Look for classic styles from J.Crew or Nordstrom that layer well over school outfits and hold up to everyday wear.
When it comes to back to school favorite items, the key is to stick with timeless, well made pieces that your kids will actually wear and use. Focus on quality for everyday staples, like backpacks, water bottles, and shoes, and build a wardrobe that works from the first day of school through the holidays. I hope this guide has been helpful!
Over the years, I’ve learned that a little planning upfront makes mornings smoother and school days easier for everyone.
