There’s something special about the first day of school. It marks a new beginning, fresh notebooks, sharpened pencils, and a shift in routine. At our house, we like to start the morning with a breakfast that feels just a little more festive than usual.
It’s become a fun tradition over the years: a favorite breakfast, cheerful tableware, and one small surprise at each child’s place setting. It’s not anything elaborate, but I hope that it’s something that the kids will remember as they grow up.
We usually start the first day of school with a special breakfast. Chocolate chip pancakes are a favorite at our house. We’ll also have fresh fruit, orange juice, and bacon, nothing super fancy, just a few extra touches to make the morning feel special.
We don’t do a big breakfast like this every school day, but it’s become a tradition on the first day. Taking the time to sit down together and mark the moment helps everyone ease into the new routine.
This isn’t about creating a picture-perfect breakfast, it’s about slowing down just enough to sit together before the special first day begins.
Even a few pieces of seasonal tableware can make the morning feel more like a celebration than a rush out the door. I love paper goods in classic school colors, reds, blues, or patterns with pencils or apples, and pair them with striped napkins or reusable cups.
You don’t need much. The goal is to create a table that feels special and fun. A few colorful touches go a long way.
One detail we’ve kept year after year is the use of construction paper as placemats. I’ve also linked some cute placemats here too. It’s fun to write a special note to each child to wish them good luck with their school year.
I like to place something useful, but still fun, at each child’s spot. It might be a set of new pencils, a highlighter pack, or a water bottle they’ll carry in their backpack that morning.
It’s a small gesture, but it adds a little excitement and reminds them that a fresh start can be something to celebrate.
These back to school breakfast ideas don’t need to be extravagant to be meaningful. The truth is, these years pass by so quickly. We only get so many first days, and setting the table is one way I hold onto them just a little longer. It’s not about the goodies on the table or the themed plates. It’s about making memories of the little moments that are fleeing.
If you’re planning a first day breakfast this year, I’ve rounded up a few favorite finds that make it easy to pull together. They’re festive, affordable, and arrive fast—so you can focus on the parts that matter most. I’ve linked all of my favorites at the bottom of this post.
