A Mom’s Guide to Sorority Recruitment: Essentials for Your Daughter’s Rush Bag

Just three years ago, I helped my daughter with getting things together for her sorority rush bag. I remember texting friends, asking my daughter to text her friends- and trying to get a list of essentials together. I understand the importance of preparing an ideal sorority rush bag to set her up for success. As a mom who has been through sorority with her daughter, I recognize the whirlwind of emotions that comes with sending her off to college and watching her navigate through the excitement of rush week. It’s a time filled with anticipation, nerves, and the hope of finding a sisterhood that feels like home.

Having gone through this journey with my own daughter, I’ve learned that preparation is key to ensuring she feels supported and comfortable throughout the long days of recruitment parties. So, I’ve put together a list of essentials that every incoming college freshman girl should have in her sorority recruitment bag:

  • Large Tote Bag: Trust me, she’ll need something spacious to carry all these items!
  • Phone Charger: A necessity for charging phones and fans!
  • Umbrella: Rain can happen and it’s good to be prepared.
  • Towel: Perfect for sitting on between parties, especially if the grass is damp.
  • Mints: Fresh breath is always a plus when meeting new people.
  • Non-melting Snacks: Keep her fueled and focused during those busy days.
  • Hairbrush: Because a girl’s gotta keep her hair looking fabulous.
  • Lip Gloss: Good for reapplying if there is a wait between parties.
  • Insulated Water Bottle: Hydration is key, especially in the midst of all the excitement.
  • Cosmetic Bag: Essentials like lipstick and mascara for quick touch-ups.
  • Mirror: Handy for checking her reflection on the go.
  • Pressed Powder: A quick fix for any shiny moments that pop up throughout the day.
  • Flat Comfortable Sandals: Like Birkenstocks, for those moments when her feet need a break between parties.
  • Handheld Fan: A lifesaver in humid weather.
  • Oil Absorbing Sheets: Keep shine at bay and her complexion fresh.
  • Blister Band-Aids: Because nobody has time for sore feet. (I recommend getting 2-3 boxes of these.)
  • Nausea/Antacid Medicine: For those nerves that might sneak up unexpectedly.
  • Deodorant: Stay fresh and all day long- and make sure to get a non-staining brand.
  • Notebook and Pen: Essential for jotting down names and impressions of each sorority.
  • Safety Pins: Good to have on hand.
  • Hand Sanitizer: Keep the germs away during recruitment!
  • Feminine Products: Have on hand if needed.

More Helpful tips for your rush bag:

  1. Tie a bright ribbon on the recruitment bag so it can be easily located after parties!
  2. Pack an extra insulated water bottle and fan if you have a long day between parties. Most college campuses will provide water and cooling stations for girls but it’s always good to have extra on hand. During fall recruitment, it’s super hot and humid. Make sure she has all the items needed to stay cool.
  3. Keep your phone charging with an external charger inside your bag during parties.

As moms, we know that our daughters might need a little extra TLC during this exciting but exhausting week. Packing these items in her recruitment bag can give us peace of mind knowing that she’s prepared for whatever comes her way. Keep your cell phone handy during the week- she will want to talk things out during this process.

I remember feeling a mix of emotions during my daughter’s recruitment week, but seeing her bond with her newfound sisters made it all worth it. So to all the moms out there, I’m happy to share this list with you and wish your daughter the best of luck as she embarks on this journey. Trust me, it’s a week she’ll never forget, filled with lifelong friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
