Fall is still a little ways off here in Alabama, and if I’m being honest, it still feels very much like summer. But after a busy August of college move-in, middle school starting, and getting everyone settled into a new school year, I have finally started thinking about the next season.
There is just something about this time of year that I love. Football Saturdays are coming, I start thinking about fall dinners and entertaining, and I always find myself wanting to make a few little changes around the house. I also start looking for a few things for my closet that will work now and later when the temperatures finally cool down.
So, I thought I would put together a little fall list of things I’m loving, saving, and keeping an eye on right now. It is a mix of home, entertaining, football, clothes, and a few random things that I think are just really good.
I’m especially excited about spending more time at home this fall. We are still working on our screened-in porch, so I have been saving things that will eventually make it feel finished and comfortable.
I tend to look for pieces that don’t feel overly seasonal because I want to be able to use them well beyond October. A pretty throw, a classic pillow, a lantern, or a simple serving piece can make a space feel ready for a new season without completely changing the room.
For me, the best fall decorating is usually subtle. I would much rather add a few beautiful pieces that work with what I already have than fill the house with obvious fall decor.

Of course, fall also means football, and that is one of my favorite parts of the season.
With a freshman at Auburn this year, I am already thinking about football Saturdays, whether we are entertaining at home or heading somewhere for the game. I love finding serving pieces that are festive enough for football season but still pretty enough to use for a regular dinner or gathering.
An Auburn tray, a fun serving board, pretty napkins, or a snack server are all easy ways to make a football gathering feel special without going overboard.
And honestly, entertaining is where I always find the most fun things to share. Whether it is a pretty table setting for a fall dinner or something simple for a Saturday afternoon, I love the little details that make people feel welcome.

I am also starting to think about my fall wardrobe, although Alabama weather means I have to be realistic about it.
For now, I am looking for pieces that can transition from the heat into cooler weather. A great pair of jeans, an easy cardigan, a pretty brown bag, simple gold jewelry, and shoes that work with dresses and jeans are the kinds of things I find myself reaching for over and over.
I also love finding pieces in classic fall colors like brown, olive, navy, and burgundy because they immediately make an outfit feel a little more seasonal without requiring a completely new wardrobe.

This season of life is especially full for us because our son Sims just started his freshman year at Auburn, while our other college boy is heading into his senior year at Furman. At home, James is starting sixth grade, so we have officially entered a whole new stage of life there, too.
That means some of the things on my list are not really about me at all.

One of my favorite ideas for a college student is a little surprise from home. Something like a Jeni’s ice cream delivery is such a fun way to let them know you are thinking about them, especially after a big test, on their birthday, or just because.
I have learned that sometimes the little unexpected things mean the most.

And then there are always the random finds.
These are usually the things I see and immediately think, “That is really good.” They may not fit neatly into a category, but they are the things I end up using, recommending to friends, or coming back to later.
So that is what is on my little fall list right now. A little bit of home, a little entertaining, football season, clothes, college life, middle school, and a few things that simply caught my eye.
Fall always seems to bring a new rhythm with it, and I am looking forward to settling into ours.
