As a mom of four, I’ve seen with my own kids how important it is to start kids on simple routines early. Skin care for tweens is one of those areas where a little guidance makes a big difference. While I’m not a dermatologist and this isn’t medical advice, these are the basic habits and products that have worked in our home. And if your child struggles with stubborn acne, a trip to the dermatologist is always the best next step.
I’ll be honest, my 11-year-old son is only using Dove soap on his face right now, and of course sunscreen when he’s outside for a long period of time. We won’t add any major acne products unless breakouts start. For sensitive young skin, keeping things simple with a mild soap is best, and of course, sunscreen is always a must. But when middle school begins, these products can be so helpful for teaching good habits and managing those first signs of changing skin.
The foundation of skin care for tweens is washing their face daily, especially after sports practices and before bed. Sweat, dirt, and oils build up quickly at this age. A gentle cleanser like CeraVe Foaming Face Wash or Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser is a great starting point. After cleansing, a lightweight moisturizer such as CeraVe Lotion is a great basic.
It’s also important to teach tweens to always use a clean towel on their face. Having a few Clean Skin Club face towels or a designated soft hand towel just for their face cuts down on bacteria. Keeping gentle face wipes in their sports bag or backpack is also a great idea for after practice.
Adding a light sunscreen or moisturizer with SPF in the morning is another smart habit for tweens. Protecting their skin early helps prevent damage down the road.

Girls often notice skin changes earlier, and a routine can be helpful at this age. Start simple with a cleanser and lotion. For older tweens, an over-the-counter acne wash with benzoyl peroxide or a spot treatment with salicylic acid can be introduced for breakouts.
At this age, makeup of course isn’t necessary. However, at this age it can be fun for girls to apply a clear lip gloss or tinted lip balm. This is an easy way to let her experiment while still having natural, makeup- free skin. A gentle fragrance-free moisturizer with SPF is also a great addition for girls who are outside often, since sun protection is one of the best long-term skin care habits she can learn now.
Another tip: remind them not to pick at skin blemishes, since it can make things worse. If your daughter is into accessories, giving her a cute toiletry bag with her own products can make skin care feel special and organized rather than like a chore.

Boys may resist skin care routines at first, but framing it as basic hygiene, just like brushing teeth, helps. Washing their face after sports and before bed is an important habit to begin. A mild cleanser and lotion are usually enough, and a simple on-the-spot acne treatment is easy for older boys to manage.
Most boys don’t want to spend extra time standing at the sink, so keeping things simple is key. One easy trick is to place their face cleanser in the shower so it becomes part of their routine without feeling like another chore. When the products are right there, boys are much more likely to actually use them consistently.
For boys who sweat a lot, having wipes for hands and face are handy for in between washes. Some boys also like having a fragrance free bar soap option, such as Dove Sensitive Skin Bar, since it feels less like a “product” and more like soap they already use.

When everything has a place, kids are more likely to keep up with routines. A small caddy, under the sink organizer, or toiletry bag can keep products separate from the rest of the family’s items. Stock up on extra hand towels and face cloths so they always have a clean one available.
If your tween has braces or other hygiene items, consider keeping their skin care grouped with those daily essentials so it’s all part of the same routine. A little organization goes a long way toward consistency.
Most importantly, let your kids know you’re here to support them. Skin care for tweens isn’t about having perfect skin, it’s about building confidence and healthy habits. With a few gentle products, some encouragement, and a little organization, they’ll feel more comfortable in their own skin and ready to take on the day. I hope this guide has been helpful. I’ve linked some products that are great basics below.
